United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that
Israel A. Left Hand Bull, age 27, of St. Francis, South Dakota, appeared before United States District Judge Roberto A. Lange on November 1, 2011, and
pled guilty to Abusive Sexual Contact. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 3 years' imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, or both.
Left Hand Bull and the victim were together most of the day on June 19, 2010. Around 10 p.m., the victim's cousin became concerned about her and walked up to Left Hand Bull's property along with two other friends. The three walked behind a sweat lodge on the property and saw Left Hand Bull sexually assaulting the victim.
The investigation was conducted by Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Marie H. Ruettgers.
A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for January 30, 2012. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing.
